El cometa C/2026 A1 (MAPS) aparece en esta imagen obtenida el 19 de febrero de 2026 con un brillo cercano a la magnitud 13, cuando este nuevo y especial objeto comienza a atraer la atención ante la posibilidad de volverse muy brillante a finales de marzo durante su extremo acercamiento al Sol.
En el momento de la captura se encontraba muy bajo sobre el horizonte suroeste al anochecer, en la constelación de Eridanus, y aproveché una breve ventana de cielo despejado antes de que la presencia de la Luna dificultara las observaciones en los días siguientes.
En las tomas individuales el cometa pasaba desapercibido, pero al alinear las imágenes siguiendo su movimiento emergió claramente en el apilado, revelando una pequeña coma verdosa suspendida entre las estrellas del campo.
La escena transmite la naturaleza aún discreta del cometa en esta fase temprana, dominado por emisiones gaseosas y con un aspecto difuso que contrasta con las estrellas puntuales del fondo.
No se dejaba ver… hasta que insistí lo suficiente.

The comet C/2026 A1 (MAPS) appears in this image obtained on February 19, 2026, shining near magnitude 13, as this new and remarkable object begins drawing attention due to the possibility of becoming very bright in late March during its extremely close passage to the Sun.
At the time of capture it was very low above the southwest horizon at dusk, in the constellation of Eridanus. I took advantage of a brief window of clear sky before the Moon began to interfere with observations in the following nights.
The comet was not visible in the individual frames, but after aligning the images on its motion it clearly emerged in the stacked result, revealing a small greenish coma suspended among the background stars.
